Apps and Your Business
The buzzword on everybody’s lips at the moment is ‘apps’. Over the last several years, apps have become extremely popular and every day, millions are downloaded by consumers all over the world. Without a doubt, apps are beneficial to businesses. They can aid profile and engagement, and sometimes, the simplest of apps can be the most effective. But, the real questions is - is an app suitable for your business?
What is an App?
Firstly, I thought I would explain what apps are. I started by looking in my dictionary for a suitable definition, no entry there. Possibly time to buy a new one!
My second route was to search through the internet and see what definitions I could find. I think one of the best is;
‘Apps’ is an abbreviation for application. An app is a piece of software. It can run on the Internet, on your computer, or on your phone or other electronic device.
With the popularity of apps ever-increasing, more and more companies are even creating their own stores to make apps even more readily available. Companies such as Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung now all have their own app stores, filled with millions of apps.
What are Apps used for?
Apps are used on a daily basis; the main appeal of an app is that you don’t need to be sitting in front of a desk to use it. Using an app on a mobile device can prove easier and less time consuming than logging onto your home PC and finding the website. For a business, they provide your customers with quick and easy access to your products, services or company information.
What type of Apps are there?
You can get apps for a number of different functions. Some of these include
- Social Apps
- Gaming Apps
- Miscellaneous Apps
Social apps are one of the most popular on the market. This is mainly due to increasing popularity of social networks and the desire to be able to keep up to date with friends and current affairs. This then poses the question; would social media be as successful without supporting mobile apps?
There are some apps which have launched companies into the wider market; a couple of examples of these are Angry Birds and Draw Something. If 12 months ago I had mentioned the company OMGPOP I am certain 99% of you would not have heard of them. However in March 2012 they sold their mobile based app to Zynga for an estimated £120 million pounds. At this time, an estimated 13.1 million people used the app every day.
There are a number of apps that are automatically installed on mobile devices when you purchase them. One of these which has become part of everyday use is Google Maps. Google Maps is integrated into many apps as well as having its own stand alone app. There are many advantages to having an interactive map at your fingertips.
