How to get a website found on the search engines

This guide has been designed to help answer the question how do I get my website found on Google and other search engines?

For a website to be well positioned on Google and other search engines there are a number of steps that need to be undertaken to enable the search engines to identify your websites subject matter and index it accordingly.

This is a brief outline detailing a few of the basic steps involved to enable your website to achieve successful positions in the search engine results.

Step one - Research and choose your Keywords

Keywords are the words that are used to enable your website to be found by visitors and the search engines. The search engines will routinely crawl the pages of a website, taking the information needed to be able to index and make the website available in the search results for the keywords that are found within the websites content and source code.

To be found for the right keywords they will need to be included within the content of your website. The trick is getting the balance just right. Too few keywords and your website won't be prioritsed in the search results, too many and the content won't flow correctly which will be off putting for visitors and the search engines could take a dim view and make the decision that the website is 'spammy'.

  Step two – Your website

You may have put a lot of effort into having a great looking website, but to increase visitors and get your website found it needs to be informative and structured correctly to be Google/search engine friendly. The three most important elements to get your website found are:

Meta Title tags: The title tags are included within the html code of your website. The search engines will use this information when deciding upon the relevance of your website for your chosen keywords in the search results. The title of each page needs to be descriptive, unique and relevant to the page content.

Meta Description Tags: The description tags are also included within the html code of your website. The text within the description tags needs to describe the content on the page accurately. As with the title tags the search engines will use this information when deciding which keywords your website should be found for and how to position your website in the search results.

Page content: Keep your content relevant to your keyword choices, grammatically correct and free from spelling mistakes. The content should be both informative to the visitor and relevant to Google /search engine results you are targeting.

Step three – Submit your website to Google and other search engines

Every search engine has an area dedicated to allow site owners to submit their website. By submitting your website you are inviting the search engines to crawl your website, index it and include it in the search results.

Step four – Create links to your website

Links to your website are an important factor to help get your website found by the search engines. They can help endorse your websites popularity and create additional traffic sources from which to generate leads.

Links to your website need to be placed on websites that have content that is relevant to your own. There are a number of ways to create links. You could start by contacting other website owners to ask if they would like to place a link to your website on their own site. They might agree to this on the basis that you provide a link to their website also. This is called ‘reciprocal linking’. There are also many free website directories for you to add a link to your website.

These are the basic rules to get your website found on the search engines. Achieving a high position on the search engines for your chosen keywords requires knowledge of how the search engines work and experience to understand which techniques the search engines give the most credit to.
