Got a good iPhone App? Read that small print first!..

by Adam on Friday, 14 August 2009

I thought it was time to wade in on the whole Google Voice removal issue (http://tiny.cc/w1Cqp)

Taking the removal part aside, seriously all you need to do is to read point 9. of the Apple Inc registered iPhone developer agreement to realise that Apple probably have the app market sewn up when it comes to looking after the interests of Apple Inc as a business.

9. Apple Independent Development.

Nothing in this Agreement will impair Apple’s right to develop, acquire, license, market, promote or distribute products, software or technologies that perform the same or similar functions as, or otherwise compete with, any other products, software or technologies that you may develop, produce, market, or distribute. In the absence of a separate written agreement to the contrary, Apple will be free to use any information, suggestions or recommendations you provide to Apple pursuant to this Agreement for any purpose, subject to any applicable patents or copyrights.

So as you can see any Average Joe could spend months creating a great app to sell for say £9.99 on the app store then Apple could call upon it's vast resource pool to create an app exactly the same and sell it for £0.99 ... I'm not saying this would be the case however be cautious it could happen, legally.

IPR's, Copyrights, Patents!! (I hear you screem)

To build iPhone apps you NEED Apple platforms, technology and tools... Do I need say anymore?

I'm a huge fan of Steve Jobs, Apple's products and I was a fan of the Apple Inc ethos when it came to collaborative business, however Google like me will be left with a slight sour taste in the mouth over the harsh attitude taken over reproducing the same app's if they feel like it and removing those they see as a threat.

I expect this will blow over quickly enough and Apple will continue to deliver great stuff, it's just a shame there has to be any flies in the ointment of this great company.
