England vs Ukraine ONLINE VIEWING ONLY??

by Adam on Monday, 14 September 2009

According to The Guardian, the Ukrainian FA has been unable to sell the rights to the game to traditional TV stations and has now appointed online sports firm Perform to investigate the possibility of showing the match live online.

Defunct sports broadcaster Setanta owned the rights to England’s away qualifiers, but since it collapsed football agency Kentaro, appointed by the Ukrainian FA to sell the rights, has been unable to find a new buyer for the match on 10 October.

Perform, which has deals with newspapers including The Sun, Telegraph and Guardian, is hoping to persuade them to show the match on their websites on a pay-per-view basis.

The progress of the plan will be closely watched by other rights holders, including the FA, as they investigate new revenue streams. (nma.co.uk)

Adam's View:

This seems a very smart move especially with the quality of streaming now on sporting events. (Sky Player and BBC being leaders in this)

It will be interesting to see the premium that would be placed on the Pay per View for the match as with England having already qualified, no pub to watch it in, no sofa for the lads and ladies to lounge on whilst watching the game (however some of us would hook the laptop up to the 42ins plasma!) this could easily see low viewing figures, however these same reasons would mean judging the success of showing exclusively online for this match would be slightly unfair.

This gets my thumbs up as a great idea for this match and perhaps more high profile future games!
